Social TV is coming to whatever screen you happen to have handy

I was at a Social TV event tonight at BAFTA and one interesting thought the panel mentioned was that a US network recently dropped 2 of its day time soaps because Facebook has cannabilized their daytime audience.

They also mentioned that the social gaming market is mainly middle aged women from the mid-west playing farmville and the many other resouce allocation games being created for FB and other social sites.

How long will it be before Farmville style games built as interactive TV shows take over the daytime TV slots?

I think the important thing is that however they do it, you can view it & interact with it via your TV, Mobile, Tablet, Laptop or all at once....whatever the user wants.

Cutting the cord

Lots of talk this week about cutting the cord or not. I would love to do it but if it doesnt work...who is going to get it in the neck from the wife & kids? Thats right big daddy thats who and frankly I'd rather throw money at the problem, for the peace of mind than try and skimp and hope. People forget that in the real world, when 'she' turns the telly on she knows how to work it and it works first time with 1 click. When someone can show me how to cut the cord and still get the one click, boom its on and you are watching ...then I'll cut the cord without the fear of DIY TV going horribly wrong during the X factor results. In the meantime Big Daddy has 6 boxes covering his ass - Sky, BT Vision, Freeview, X-Box and Wii...cutting the cord couldnt come too soon and when it does i will happily throw all those in the bin. Just imagine how much nicer our houses will look with just a telly and no spider web of wires hanging out the back plugged into a ludicrous amount of black and white and grey boxes.

YouView vs UK IPTV

Looks like the money men have pulled the plug on UK IPTV since Canvas (YouView) came into play. UK VC's have reduced new funding by 99% over the last 12 months.

Looks like they have thrown in the towel on innovation outside the major content plays (excuse me Sky & Virgin)

TV via Web v's IPTV

Definitions I use: OTT (Over the Top) meaning delivering Web video via a browser. IPTV (Internet Protocol TV) meaning delivery via IP but to a set top box or connected TV, console.

When it comes to speed to market, scalable roll-out & platform flexibility the OTT model is hard to beat. For quality of service (QoS) IPTV is still number 1, but for how long?

My view is build a OTT service, buy the content rights now and start promoting the hell out of it or end up taking a back seat until the waves of consolidation start in a year or 2. Full blown IPTV is a serious investment and its still relatively clunky so while the QoS is better than OTT its a slower, more expensive roll-out and more risky.

If your OTT is getting traction, then you will be able to piggy back any number of IPTV services being built by Telco's and CE manufacturers (Connected TV & Games Consoles) trying to add value to their networks or devices. This will give you a relatively cheap route to broadening your user base using their distribution & marketing.

When to jump in? Well it depends on your existing business- are you a broadcaster (then cover yourself and launch now) or if your a media investor (do you wait for the fall out and consolidation phase or pick a winner now) or if your an entrepreneur with a gap in the local market (then hook up with a non TV media company in your market to sell the Ads and go through the usual market analysis / due diligence).
